The Scandal of Lent

Dear Church Family,

The President did what?!? The local pastor said what?!? Scandals aren’t just bad because bad things occurred. Scandals deal with the things we did not see coming; things that shouldn’t happen. The plot and conspiracy that unfolded to condemn a man named Jesus two millennia ago is a scandal.

But there is more to this scandal than what transpired in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago. The scandal includes us all! The scandal of our sin caused all Jesus endured. Greater still is the scandal of God’s grace – his undeserved love for us – that alone moved him to send his own Son to die for us.

During this season of Lent we will unpack the scandal that took place 2,000 years ago and its significance for us today.

“For in Scripture it says: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall” (1 Peter 2:6-8).
