Read Exodus 1
Exodus 1:15-17 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, 16 “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.”17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.
Observation- The midwives did something very courageous here. Despite being commanded to kill the boys, they let the boys live. They defied Pharoah’s order because they feared God. They could have lost their lives or they could have been severely punished, but they didn’t care. Pharaoh was asking them to do something against God’s will and they wouldn’t do it.
Application- The government is set up for my good. God has established it to provide for my physical needs and he expects that I obey it. That is until they ask me to do something against God’s will. When the government starts to demand or command me to break God’s law, then I have a decision to make: will I compromise my Christian values for the sake of avoiding punishment or will I follow and obey God? My God promises to deliver me. I will listen and follow him.
Prayer- Thank you, Father, for setting up a government to provide for my protection and my physical needs. I ask you to be with them and lead them to make godly decisions. If they should ask me to do something that goes against your will, guide me, lead me, and deliver me. Thank you for forgiving me for the times that I cave and compromise my Christian beliefs. Help me to stand firm on your Word never compromising my relationship with you. Amen.
