James 3:3-5a When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.

No matter if we follow an intense workout regime or not, all of us are powerful. We may not be physically strong, but verbally we deal some serious damage. That’s because all of us have a tongue, and though the tongue is small, it is very full of might. Just like a bit can control a horse and a rudder can control a big ship, our tongue controls the powerful words that come out of our mouth. We experience that power every time someone says something nice to us. Think of how it makes you feel when you receive a compliment, or when someone tells you that they believe in you. Or think of the peace you feel when you hear the words, “I forgive you and I love you.” Those are the powerful words that God tells you today and everyday because of Jesus. Words are powerful. How can you use that power for someone else’s good today?

Heavenly Father, thank you for your powerful word that comforts my heart today. Thank you for your love and your forgiveness through Jesus. Help me to use my words to impact someone else’s life today. Amen.
