Proverbs 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death and those who love it will eat its fruit.
King Solomon wrote these words around 980BC. Pretty wise words from the wisest person to ever live. Words have power to bring death and life. We can tear someone down or we can cheer their sad hearts simply with words. And yet, words can bring even more life than that. When Jesus was alive, he asked his disciples if they were going to leave him like all the other people were. But the disciples said to Jesus, “To whom should we go? You have the words of eternal life.” See, words don’t just cheer your broken heart. Words bring you even more life than that. It is with words that God has communicated eternal life, and that is exactly what is contained in the Bible. It is through those words that God brings you heaven as you hear about Jesus and his perfect life, innocent death, and victorious resurrection from the grave. If God didn’t communicate this message in words, we’d never have it. But he has and it has brought to you hope and eternal life.
Father in heaven, thank you for the gift of words and communication. It is through your words that you have communicated to me how to get to heaven. It is not by my power or my works, but through your Son, Jesus, who lived, died and rose for me. Thank you for bringing me eternal life through your Word. Help me to treasure it every day of my life. Amen.
