Psalm 73:4-5,12 They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. 5 They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills. 12 This is what the wicked are like—always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
Asaph looks at the wicked and sees they have all of these things. They have health, they have wealth, AND they have no cares in the world. That’s exactly what he wants. Isn’t that what we want, too? We want all of those things! But here’s the reality: all of those things only bring temporary happiness. We may get healed from our sickness, but eventually health declines until we pass away. Wealth is here one day and gone the next. We gain the wealth we want and can afford what are hearts long for and yet we still aren’t happy. We want more and more. All these things will make us happy for a brief moment, but then we’ll go on wanting.
What is the secret to being content? It’s seeking the one who brings lasting happiness. In him, you find rest from anxiety and fear knowing he’s conquered your greatest fear, death. You find rest knowing that he’s your loving Father taking care of all your needs. You find purpose in life as he tells you he is bringing you into his glory. You find value not because of what you offer but because he offers you heaven through Jesus. You are accomplished not because you’ve worked hard enough, but because Jesus says, “It is finished.” Salvation is won. Heaven is yours. Rest in Jesus today.
Dear Jesus, thank you for fulfilling everything that I need, want, and desire. Today, help me to seek you and desire you above all things because I know that in you all my desires are filled.
