2 Corinthians 9:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
Do you know what I find myself believing quite a bit? I believe that it is better to get than to give. I love getting things and receiving gifts, but I don’t always love giving. Why? Because I’m losing when I give. I’m losing my time, my resources, my money, my free time…the list goes on. I’d much rather receive than give. I wonder if you can relate?
Today’s Scripture lesson actually reveals that way of thinking is a lie. God’s Word actually says that when you give generously, you receive generously. If a farmer were to go out to a field and by stingy with spreading seed, he should expect a stingy harvest. But if a farmer goes and generously spreads the seed, he should expect a generous harvest. The same is true with giving. God actually says that when you generously give, you should expect to receive a generous harvest. When you give you get! Now, that doesn’t mean that if you give $5 you should expect $15 back. When you give generously, your harvest will come in many different forms. Maybe it’ll be joy, maybe it’ll be more trust in God, maybe it’ll be a deeper life of thanks. When we give we should expect a harvest in return!
Dear Lord, you promise that when I give, I’ll get. Help me to trust that promise today, and let me be thankful for whatever way you choose to bless me today through my generosity. Amen.
