Luke 1:18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”
Zechariah had the opportunity of a lifetime. He was chosen as the priest to go in and light the incense in the altar. This only happened once in a priest’s life if he was lucky. As he’s in there an angel appears to him telling him he’s going to have a son! How does Zechariah respond? Doubt. He’s an old man now. His wife is passed the point of child bearing. So he says, “What sign will you give me?” How could you doubt, Zechariah?? You have an angel standing next to you telling you your son is going to fulfill God’s promises from the Old Testament. He’s going to be the one to go before the Lord and prepare the people. I wonder if the angels watch us and wonder how could we doubt God’s promises? We read them in God’s Word and we say, “What sign will you give me?” How does God respond? “I have given you a sign. The virgin was with child and gave birth to a son. Look in the manger. There you see how much I love you.” As we look into the manger we see Jesus. God’s ancient promised fulfilled. He promised he’d send someone to destroy the devil’s work and save us, and that’s exactly what he did. That Son was born to save us. How can you know God will keep his promises to you? Because he’s kept his greatest promise to you. He will continue to keep his promises for every day of your life.
Heavenly Father, I praise and thank you for having a heart to save me. I thank you that when you tell us a promise you can’t lie. Help me to look at your former promises and see how you have kept them. As I view those, let them deepen my trust in your promises.
