Famous Last Words

What's the Big Idea?

The season of Lent is a season of repentance and reflection as we walk with Jesus to the cross and focus on the depth of his love and passion for us. It is a time to be deeply moved by his sacrifice and love and commitment for us. So in this series, we will focus on the seven statements Jesus spoke while on the cross. Many people have spoken “famous last words” before they died. What “Famous Last Words” would Jesus speak? Listen in!

February 21: “Father, Forgive Them”

Many people have spoken “famous last words” before they died. What “Famous Last Words” would Jesus speak when He was being killed mercilessly on a cross? You might expect bitter words of anger, with the way He was being treated. But… instead of bitter words of anger, He asked his Father to forgive those who were wronging Him! Who would have expected that? How can these words comfort us? What can we learn from this?

February 28: “Dear Woman, Here Is Your Son”

In his second words from the cross, Jesus turns his love and compassion toward his family and friends. He wants to make sure they are taken care of in ways that are good for their bodies and souls. What tender love He shows, even while dying for us!

March 7: “Today You Will be With Me in Paradise”

How do you handle your guilt? Do you cover it up? Feel bad for a couple of days? Does it keep you up at night? Depending on who you ask, there are many different ways to handle the guilt. Psychologists might try to track it back to your childhood. Talk-show hosts might tell you to believe in yourself. But in the Bible today we are going to learn the only true way to handle guilt. It comes from the third word Jesus said from the cross, “Today you will be with me in paradise.”

March 14: “My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?”

We have heard Jesus speak words of forgiveness, words of compassion for his family and friends, and words of eternal salvation for a sinner. Today, we hear something very different from Jesus. We hear “Why?” There’s a word we would never have expected to hear from Jesus. Jesus cries out in the middle of his suffering: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Let’s hear what this means, and what this means for us. Its implications are huge!

March 21: “I Thirst”

The next “famous words” Jesus speaks from the cross are these: “I thirst.” What was He thirsty for? What are you thirsty for? Our bodies crave water, but what is your heart thirsty for? Love? Acceptance? Purpose? Jesus is the only One who can satisfy your thirst. Thank God that Jesus went thirsty so He could quench the thirst of our hearts.

Good Friday, April 2: “It Is Finished”/“Father, Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit”

On Good Friday, Jesus was crucified for us. Here is where He spoke his “Famous Last Words.” This evening we listen to the last two times He spoke. “It Is Finished.” Three words in English, one in Greek. Finished. Accomplished. Our debt paid in full and we have the receipt. And then… once again, He calls God his “Father.” And willingly gives over his life to purchase our eternal life. Mission accomplished. We never have heard such comforting words as Jesus’ last words before He died.
