Communicate with your child

See what the Bible says about what and how to communicate with your child.

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

Proverbs 22:6

From grandparents, siblings, and relatives to teachers, coaches, and friends your children will have many influences on them throughout their life. None, however, will be as important or as effective as the influence you have as their parent. Even on the days when it doesn't feel like it.

God knows that's true. He designed it that way. And because he did, he also gives guidance for what and how to communicate with your child. The following Bible passages express the most important things you can communicate to your child to start them off on the godly way they should go.

Biblical Guidance For What and How to Communicate With Your Child

Teach your child what God says

Deuteronomy 6:5-7
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6:5-7

Cherish your child

Psalm 127:3-5
Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.

Listen to your child

James 1:19-20
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

Pray with your child

Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Forgive your child

Ephesians 4:32
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Praise God with your child

Psalm 78:4
We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.

Bring your child to worship

Mattthew 19:14
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Discipline your child

Proverbs 29:17
Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.

Teach your child to respect

Ephesians 6:1-4
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Be compassionate with your child

Colossians 3:12
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
