It Is Good to Be Near God

Dear Church Family,

This is it. The final countdown. We’re coming to the end of the Best. Prayer. Ever.

Yet even after all that Jesus has taught us to pray for in the Lord’s Prayer, this fact remains—the world is filled with all kinds of evils. We see pain, suffering, and sorrow in the lives of others. We experience days of sorrow and difficulty in our own lives. Whenever we or other people consider these evils, or our life story takes a tragic turn, we might be tempted to wonder whether there is a God. We might ask, “How could a loving God permit such things to happen?” We might even begin to wonder whether praying “deliver us from evil” does any good.

That’s why, dear friends, I want to invite you to join me this weekend for worship as Pastor Caleb preaches on the seventh petition of the Lord’s Prayer. It is only in God’s presence gathered together around his word where our hearts can find true peace. This is what a man named Asaph learned also long ago when he was troubled by the tragic unfairness he perceived in the world. Finally he concluded: 16 When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me 17 till I entered the sanctuary of God…. 28 But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge. (Psalm 73:16-17, 28)
