Putting Away Pride

Dear Church Family,

CS Lewis once wrote in his classic Mere Christianity: “If anyone would like to acquire humility I can, I think, tell him the first step. The first step is to realize that one is proud. And a biggish step, too. At least, nothing whatever can be done before it. If you think you are not conceited, you are very conceited indeed.”

That’s why this week in Proverbs we focus on pride. Pride not only looks down on others. It also fails to look upward to God. Pride makes us overconfident and out of touch with reality. Pride is a blindspot that makes us look foolish. And most destructively of all, as Proverbs says, “Pride goes before destruction” (13:10).

Please join me, therefore, this Sunday as we learn how to identify and put away sinful pride so that we would be exalted by the Lord instead of put down in the end. This Sunday we will also celebrate the blessings of the gospel that we have as heirs of the Lutheran Reformation.

A Word of Thanks – My family and I would like to express our thanks to all from our church who donated to the gift we were given last Sunday for “pastor appreciation month.” We look forward to enjoying some fun and a good meal the next time we’re all able to be together! Thank you!
