Read Genesis 11

Scripture: Genesis 11:4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

Observation: God wanted the people to spread out over the face of the earth and to live for his glory. The people had a different idea. They would not only build a city and not spread out, but also they would make their name great instead of God’s.

Application: What is my purpose in life? Why am I here? If I’m honest with myself, I’d love to make a name for myself. I want to be important. I want to leave my legacy. But that’s not my purpose. I’m here to make the Lord’s name great. I’m here to live for him in every aspect of my life. I’m here so that through my work, people may see the gracious, compassionate, merciful God. That through me, they may see the loving Savior who has saved me, delivered me, redeemed me, and equipped me with everything I have. I will live today to make his name great even at the expense of my own name.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, your grace has forgiven me and saved me.  Through my words, my work, and my actions today, make your name great. Let others see you through me. Amen.
