Read Genesis 13

Scripture: Genesis 13: 8 8 So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”

Observation: Abraham could have easily said, “God promised this land to me. You’re going to have to go elsewhere.” But he didn’t. To calm the quarreling among their people, Abraham humbly put Lot first and said, “You choose.” Abraham could do this knowing that God had promised him the land, promised to bless him, and promised to protect him.

Application: Because of sin, quarreling in relationships is something that I experience. Here, I can see the way to end the quarreling isn’t by flexing my rights, but rather by humbly putting the other person ahead of myself. The only way I can do this is by knowing that God has promised to take care of all my needs, supply me with all good things, and to work all things out for the good of those who love him. It is because of those promises that I can humbly put others before me to bring peace in our relationship.

Prayer: Father, thank you for promising to take care of all my needs and to supply me with all good gifts. Because I have you and your promises, I can humbly put others before me trusting that all my needs will be met. Help me to end quarrels today by doing just that. Amen.
