Read Exodus 6

Scripture-Exodus 6:6-9-  “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.  I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.  And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.’”  Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labor.

Observation- The people were discouraged because their workload increased. So God appeared to Moses and told him all the things he would do for the people. God used the word “I” eleven times in these verses. Each statement was about who he is and what he would do for the people. Moses relayed the message of hope, but the people were too bitter from their circumstances to receive the good news.

Application- The Bible is filled with the message of who God is and what he has done for the world. That includes me. God repeatedly throughout Scripture tells me what he has done for me, yet I tend to have an Israelite attitude when my circumstances aren’t what I want them to be. Yet, God is who he is, and he has done what he has done, and he will do what he promises he will do regardless of my circumstances right now. God doesn’t promise me an easy life, but he does promise he loves me, he has delivered me from my sins, he will be with me, and he will deliver me from death and hell. So, I will focus on who he is and what he has done instead of my circumstances.

Prayer- Father, thank you for being who you are. You are a God who has not only delivered me from sin, death, and the devil, but you are also a God who can’t lie. Your promises remain true no matter what is going on. Help me to trust you more. Let your promises guide my attitude and my perspective of you instead of my circumstances. Amen.
