Read 1 Samuel 20

Scripture 1 Samuel 20::13-  But if my father intends to harm you, may the Lord deal with Jonathan, be it ever so severely, if I do not let you know and send you away in peace. May the Lord be with you as he has been with my father.

Observation- The friendship between David and Jonathan was very deep. Their friendship  had something that Jonathan didn’t have in his relationship with Saul, his father: the Lord. The key to their friendship was the Lord and a self-sacrificing attitude. Jonathan could have selfishly wanted the throne and kept David at a distance, but he didn’t. Instead, he looked out for David’s best interest.

Application- God created human beings to be relational. He intended us to have close friends in this world with whom we can have fellowship. The key to a deep friendship is the Lord and self-sacrificing attitude. If I want good friends, I need to be a good friend and invest in others. That means not being selfish but rather giving of my time, my attention, and maybe even financially. Most importantly, the Lord needs to be part of that relationship. When he is, that friendship will be deeper than some of my relationships with even family members.

Prayer- Father, thank you for the gift of good friends. Forgive me for the times I have let my friends down through my selfishness. Motivated by Jesus’ love and forgiveness, help me to invest in my friends today. Amen.
