Read 1 Samuel 24
Scripture- 1 Samuel 24:12-13 May the Lord judge between you and me. And may the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,’ so my hand will not touch you.
Observation- David had Saul in a vulnerable position where he could easily kill him. It had to be a tempting moment. Saul was chasing him for no reason looking to kill him. If roles were reversed, Saul would surely have killed David. But David didn’t because “from evildoers come evil deeds.” He didn’t want to be considered an evildoer. He wanted to be godly. Because of this, he let God be the avenger.
Application- It is so easy for me to take matters into my own hands especially when someone wrongs me. In those moments, I want justice and I want to be the one administering that justice. In this section of Scripture, I’m reminded that I have a God who avenges. I don’t have to do anything evil to get revenge. My God will avenge me on his timeline. Instead, I will be patient and seek God doing what he would want me to do. Then I’ll have peace and comfort waiting on my God.
Prayer- Father in heaven, what a comfort it is to know that you are a God who is looking out for my best interest. When someone wrongs me, you will avenge me. You will carry out perfect justice on my behalf. Give me patience as I wait for your timing to deliver me from my enemies. Give me trust that you will carry it out in the best and most perfect way. Let me turn from evil to godliness today. Amen.
