Read 1 Samuel 27

Scripture- 1 Samuel 27:2- So David and the six hundred men with him left and went over to Achish son of Maok king of Gath.

Observation- The pressures and anxiety of Saul chasing him finally caught up with David. He decided that he would go into Philistine territory for refuge. The pressure of Saul did stop, but it was replaced with the pressure of needing to lie and deceive to stay alive. Now David didn’t have the pressure of someone killing him but to sin against God through his lies.

Application- Where am I seeking refuge? Do I seek refuge in God or do I seek a refuge that puts me into situations where I’m tempted to sin? David sought it in enemy territory where he’d be faced with temptations. My physical enemies may stop pursuing me but the devil never will. He will continue to track me down no matter where I am. There’s only one refuge he can’t touch and that is the refuge of the Lord. The arms of Jesus who has forgiven me and has defeated the devil. In that safe place, the devil cannot touch me. No matter what is going on, my refuge is the Lord.

Prayer- Father, my enemy the devil pursues me every day. No matter where I’m at he will continue to come after me and put pressure on me in different ways. Be my refuge and safe place. Guard me and protect me. Defend me with the righteousness that Jesus won at the cross and empty tomb. No matter what happens today, let me run to you, my safe place. Amen.
