Read 2 Samuel 11

Scripture- 2 Samuel 11:1-3- In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army…One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing…The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”

Observation- David made three big mistakes here. 1) He wasn’t doing what he was supposed to be doing. Kings were supposed to accompany their troops out to war, but David decided to stay home. 2) He let his eyes wander toward Bathsheba which is what they were not supposed to be looking at. 3) He rejected the counsel given to him. These three steps led to all kinds of sinful actions as David ends up breaking the 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, and 10th commandments.

Application- The devil is always prowling around looking to devour me. I can’t take a day off from being vigilant and standing firm on God’s promises. If I want to stand firm I need to be doing what God has called me to do. I need to keep my eyes and my mind on godly things and not let them wander toward sin. Finally, I need to humbly accept the wise counsel and accountability that God has placed in my life. Why do I want to do this? Because sin separates me from God. Thanks be to God that he has reconciled me through Jesus!

Prayer- Father, I want to be vigilant against sin. It was my sin that separated me from you in the first place. Give me grace, mercy, and forgiveness. Let me focus on my mind and eyes on what is good and godly. Help me to humbly accept the accountability you have placed in my life. Amen.
