Read 2 Samuel 12
Scripture- 2 Samuel 12:5-6- David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this must die! He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.
Observation- It had been at least nine months since David committed his sins. He had become so calloused to his guilt that he didn’t even realize he was the bad guy that Nathan was describing. Yet, he condemned the man. It was so easy for him to see the guilt of someone else but completely miss his own.
Application- My heart can get so calloused toward my own sin. I can watch with a careful eye and see how others are failing, but I can so easily glance over my own failings and sins. I have blinders on and don’t see them, or I justify them to myself. When that happens, pride and arrogance fills my heart. It is so important for my relationship with the Lord to have an honest look at my own life. Nothing is more deadly than pride and arrogance. Thank God for people like Nathan who help me see where my failings are, and for my Savior Jesus who has taken away my sins.
Prayer- Father, thank you for sending people into my life who hold me accountable. Give me a humble spirit that receives that news willingly. Guard my heart against pride and arrogance by letting me see my own sin. Then lead me to my Savior Jesus where I’m reminded that my sins are forgiven. Amen.
