Read 2 Samuel 14

Scripture- 2 Samuel 14:30-  Then he said to his servants, “Look, Joab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire.” So Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.

Observation- Absalom grew up in David’s household. No doubt that David took him to the temple. For all the problems that David had, he still had a heart for the Lord. So it can be assumed that he brought his kids and family to worship the Lord. That’s a good first step, but what David’s children needed was for him to teach them about character, obedience, and a heart for the Lord. His children needed to know that their relationship with the Lord wasn’t just about facts but applying those facts to their hearts.

Application- The most important thing I can do for my daughters and the next generation is to lead them to Jesus. To know how their salvation has been won by him grants them eternal life. I need to be on my guard to not just teach them the head knowledge about Jesus, but to instruct them in heart knowledge. Our relationship with Jesus isn’t just one of routinely going to church. It’s taking the truths of God’s Word and letting it shape our character, mold our obedience, and impact our lives as we live for him who died for us and was raised again.

Prayer- Father, thank you for taking hold of my life and for constantly molding me and shaping me. Forgive me for the times that I don’t get parenting right, and for all the times that I fail to lead my children to you. Give me a heart that desires you. Let me then lead the next generation to you so that their lives may be changed forever. Amen.
