Read 2 Samuel 15
Scripture- 2 Samuel 15:6- Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.
Observation- Absalom had a lot of good qualities that would have made him a good king. He was charismatic. He looked the part. People liked him and wanted to follow him. There was one thing that Absalom was missing: a life of humble confession of sin. His lack of humble confession led him down the path of continued sin which separated him from God.
Application- Confession isn’t easy. It takes humility to admit that I am wrong. That is even more true as I stand before the holy and perfect God. Admitting and confessing specific sins is so hard to do because I don’t like to admit I was wrong nor do I like to think about my failings. Confession is good for the soul though. As I confess my sins, I am reminded of the Lord’s grace and forgiveness for me. It is through this process of confession and forgiveness that my heart changes, I turn from sin, my love for the Lord increases, and he draws me closer to himself.
Prayer- Father, you tell me in the psalms that a broken and contrite heart you will not despise. I don’t have to be afraid to admit my sins to you because you won’t cast me away. Instead, you will tell me that my sins are forgiven through Jesus. Give me that humble heart that lives in confession and forgiveness. Draw me closer to you that I may turn from the sin that separates me from you. Amen.
