Read 2 Samuel 18
Scripture- 2 Samuel 18:12-13- But the man replied, “Even if a thousand shekels were weighed out into my hands, I would not lay a hand on the king’s son. In our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man Absalom for my sake.’ And if I had put my life in jeopardy—and nothing is hidden from the king—you would have kept your distance from me.”
Observation- This man had heard what King David said concerning Absalom. He wanted the troops to deal with him gently. He knew right from wrong and no amount of money would be worth doing wrong. He knew he would have to stand before the king and give an account for what he did. In that moment, it wouldn’t matter how big the reward was.
Application- Just like this man would have to stand before King David, I’m going to have to stand before the King of the world and give an account. Thankfully, God has written his law on my heart and revealed it to me in his Word. I know what is good and what is evil. No amount of money or earthly success is worth doing what God told me not to do. In the end, money and success can’t save me. Only my God can. He is the greatest reward that I can receive. Confident in his love and forgiveness through Jesus, I will choose to do right today.
Prayer- Father, in your goodness, you have revealed right from wrong to me. In this world, I face temptations to go after earthly rewards through doing what is evil in your sight. Guard my heart that I may continue to seek you, the ultimate reward. Forgive my sins. Strengthen my faith in you.
