Read 1 Kings 19

Scripture- 1 Kings 19:12-13- After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Observation- Elijah had a big spiritual high. God sent the fire to engulf the sacrifice, and the prophets of Baal were put to death. But right after that, Elijah went into despair. Instead of doing the work that God had laid out for him, he prayed that he would die and he took off for a cave a ways away from where he was supposed to be. Yet God didn’t destroy him or deal with him harshly. Instead, he came to him with the gentle whisper of his Word.

Application- How does God deal with me? In the same way that he dealt with Elijah. He doesn’t come to me in a storm, an earthquake, or some sort of fire. He doesn’t appear to me in nature. Instead, he comes to me with the gentleness of his Word. I open the Bible and hear the gentle whisper of how God is taking care of my life. I hear his reassuring words that my sins are forgiven. I listen as God speaks to me the hope of the resurrection. God’s gentle whisper to me is found in the Bible. I don’t need to go looking for God’s Word. I had it right here in the Bible. This is how he talks to me and deals with me. This is where I find him every day.

Prayer- Gracious Father, I am so thankful that I don’t have to go looking for you and your Word. You have given me the Bible, which is your very words. Thank you for your life-giving message, for your gentle reassurance, and for your gracious words of forgiveness. Motivate me to read your Word daily. Amen.
