Read 2 Kings 13
Scripture- 2 Kings 13:23- But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling to destroy them or banish them from his presence.
Observation- The Israelites were continuing in their idolatry. Instead of repenting of their sin and turning to God, they were getting further from him. Yet, God was gracious and had compassion on them. He refused to destroy them or banish them. Why? Because of the covenant he made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Application- It is easy for me to look at the Israelites and wonder why God didn’t just get rid of them. However, if I were to look at my life objectively, I’d ask the same question about me. I commit the same sins every day. I continue to have a hard time abandoning the sins that I struggle with. Yet, God is gracious and compassionate. Why? Not because he has a soft spot for me, but because of his promise. His covenant-promise that through Abraham’s family all nations on the earth will be blessed. That blessing was Jesus. Through him, I have the forgiveness of sins. It is because of Jesus that God deals with me with grace, compassion, and mercy every day. It isn’t dependent on me, but on his promise. His promises will never fail.
Prayer- Father, thank you for your covenant promise. Because of that, I have your grace and compassion. I’m so glad that your grace isn’t dependent on my actions one way or another. I have the confidence that your promise of forgiveness is mine because it’s dependent on Jesus. Let this grace guard my mind and motivate my heart today. Amen.
