Read Jonah 3
Scripture- Jonah 3:5-6- The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.
Observation- It seems that as soon as the Ninevites heard God’s Word from Jonah, they immediately repented. They heard God’s Word, believed God’s Word, and put God’s Word into action. Their reaction to God’s Word was very different from Jonah’s reaction. Jonah heard and ran. They heard and put the Word into action.
Application- As I look at these two reactions to God’s Word, I’m wondering which one am I? Do I hear God’s Word, believe God’s Word, and put it into practice, or am I like Jonah where I hear God’s Word and run? God’s Word is truth. He knows what’s best for others and he knows what’s best for me. It is his Word that not only tells me what to do but also how I have been forgiven through Jesus. His Word is true! So I want to hear it, believe it, and put it into practice today.
Prayer- Father, thank you for your powerful Word. In it, I learn the truth of salvation and forgiveness. I also learn how you want me to do with my life. Let me hear your Word, believe it, and put it into practice today. Amen.
