Read 2 Peter 1
Scripture- 2 Peter 1:9-But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
Observation- Peter encourages his readers to have faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love. Then he says that if they don’t have those things, they have forgotten that they have been cleansed from past sins. How will his readers grow in those areas of life? Only by starting at the beginning. They need to go back to the forgiveness of sins won by Jesus.
Application- The same is true for me. I look at the list that Peter lays out earlier in the chapter and I think, “I would love those things and to have more of them!” The only way I will, though, is if I keep going back to the beginning. I need to keep being reminded of the forgiveness of sins that my Savior won for me. As I grow in that, it will lead to faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love. To grow in my godly living starts at the beginning of the forgiveness process.
Prayer- Father, thank you for the forgiveness you’ve won for me through Jesus. Help me never to forget that it’s from there that godly living stems. Give me the humility to confront my sin and the confidence that you’ve forgiven it. Then send your Holy Spirit to help me grow in godly living. Amen.
