Dear Church Family,
Last Sunday we began a section where Peter addresses Christians as “foreigners and exiles” here on this earth. The reason for this is that we are first and foremost citizens of the kingdom of heaven. Our highest allegiance is to Jesus Christ. Heaven is our true home. Yet, we still live here on this earth. The great hope we have as Christians calls for us to live Christian live—as exiles in the culture, as people under secular authority, even enduring unjust suffering in the same way that Jesus himself did.
With this as the framework, we move into chapter 3 this Sunday where we are compelled to consider how Christian husbands and wives are an object lesson to the unbelieving world of Jesus’ love for us. We will talk honestly about some of the challenges people face in applying this to our world today – especially when one spouse isn’t a believer.
Yet there is a beauty in what Peter describes. Christian husbands and wives, when united by a common faith in Jesus Christ, are heirs together of God’s gracious gift of life. Together they not only get to show each other the love of Christ, but share the gospel with an unbelieving, pagan world so that others might one day join us in praising God who gives us a living hope.
ICYMI – Watch my message from last Sunday based on 1 Peter 2:11-25 where God has us think about what it means that we are “foreigners and exiles” here. This is a central point to understanding the next couple weeks as we proceed through 1 Peter.
