Eat, drink, and be merry? But wait…there’s more!

Dear Church Family,

You might be familiar with the saying, “Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die.” This suggests that we should enjoy life to the fullest while we can. St. Paul echoed this sentiment, writing, “If the dead are not raised, ‘Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die’” (1 Corinthians 15:32). However, Paul emphasized the “if.” He meant that living for pleasure alone makes sense only if this life is all there is. But it’s not. Jesus promises to raise us from the dead and bring us to his home, a place of perfect comfort and beauty. With this assurance, we are freed from the need to live self-indulgently. Instead, we can be generous people, using wealth and whatever else that God has given us to serve both him and others. We can live a life of startling generosity.
